A spreader includes a frame having wheels mounted on an axle. A gear assemblyon theaxle is coupled with a shaft. A hopper is mounted on the frame and holdsparticulate that emptiesthrough an opening within the bottom wall. An impeller is mounted on the shaftand receives theparticulate emptied from the hopper. A controlled-release assembly is mountedabout the shaft andincludes a drive housing secured to the hopper. The drive housing has a funnelopening to dispensethe particulate therethrough. A transfer wheel within the drive housing isrotatably coupled to theshaft. When the shaft is rotating, the transfer wheel rotates whereby theparticulate is delivered tothe funnel. When the shaft is stationary, the transfer wheel is stationarywhereby particulate is notdelivered to the funnel.
