A fundus camera includes an illumination optical system that projects a ring-shaped illumination light on a pupil of a subjects eye, an imaging optical system that forms a fundus image of the illumination light on an imaging plane, and an index projection unit that projects an operation distance index on a cornea of the subjects eye. An imaging unit captures a reflection image from the fundus and a reflection image of the operation distance index, a driving unit moves the operation distance index in an optical axis direction, an index shape recognition unit recognizes an index shape projected on the cornea according to a movement of a light emitting surface of the index projection unit by the driving unit, and a detection unit detects operation distances of the illumination optical system and the imaging optical system with respect to the subjects eye.
