The present invention relates to a pharmaceutical composition and health functional food containing an ethanol extract of Undaria pinnatifida as an active ingredient for preventing or treating neurodegenerative diseases. The ethanol extract of Undaria pinnatifida described in the present invention exhibits effects of promoting growth of neurite of a nerve cell, increasing a survival rate of a nerve cell, promoting generation of a neurite in an early phase of nerve cell growth, increasing complexity of a neurite, promoting growth of neuraxis, and increasing synaptogenesis and activity of synaptic transmission of a nerve cell. Therefore, the ethanol extract of Undaria pinnatifida can be effectively used to prevent, treat, or alleviate various kinds of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer&prime；s disease, Parkinson&prime；s disease, Lou Gehrig&prime；s disease, Huntington&prime；s disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, multiple sclerosis, brain dysfunction caused by immune disorder, progressive neurodegenerative diseases, a metabolic brain disease, Niemann-Pick disease, and dementia caused by ischemic stroke and cerebral hemorrhage, and to enhance learning ability and memory.본 발명은 미역(Undariapinnatifida)의 에탄올 추출물을 유효성분으로 함유하는 퇴행성 신경 질환(neurodegenerative disease)의 예방 또는 치료용 약학적 조성물 및 건강 기능 식품에 관한 것이다. 본 발명에서 설명되는 미역 에탄올 추출물은 신경세포의 신경돌기 성장 촉진, 신경세포의 생존율 증가, 신경세포 발달 초기의 신경돌기 생성 촉진, 신경돌기의 복잡성 증대, 축삭의 성장 촉진 및 신경세포의 연접 생성과 연접 전달 활성 증가 등의 효과를 나타내므로 이를 알츠하이머 질환, 파킨슨 질환, 루게릭 질환, 헌팅톤 질환, 근위축성 측석 경화증, 다발성 경화증, 면역계 이상 뇌기능 부전, 진행성 신경퇴행질환, 대사성 뇌질환, 니만-픽병, 뇌 허혈 및 뇌출혈로 인한 치매 등과 같은 각종 퇴행성 신경 질환의 예방, 치료 또는 개선과 학습 능력 및 기억 능력의 증진에 효과적으로 이용될 수 있다.
