The present invention relates to a pharmaceutical composition for preventing or treating dementia containing a Sargassum serratifolium C. Agardh extract as an active ingredient. More specifically, the present invention relates to a composition containing a Sargassum serratifolium C. Agardh extract and a compound isolated from the extract as active ingredients. The composition of the present invention ensures stability without causing cytotoxicity, is capable of inhibiting expression of protein and gene inflammation-associated factors, and excellently suppresses production of beta-amyloid which is a causative factor for dementia, thereby being applicable as materials for functional foods and drugs for preventing, ameliorating, and treating dementia.본 발명은 톱니모자반 추출물을 유효성분으로 포함하는 치매의 예방 또는 치료용 약학적 조성물에 관한 것이다. 구체적으로 본 발명은 톱니모자반 추출물 및 상기 추출물로부터 분리된 화합물을 유효성분으로 포함하는 조성물로서 이들 조성물은 세포에 독성을 유발시키지 않아 안정성이 있으며, 염증 관련 인자들의 유전자 및 단백질 발현을 억제할 수 있고, 치매의 원인으로 알려진 베타 아밀로이드의 생성을 억제하는 효과가 우수하여, 치매를 예방, 개선 및 치료할 수 있는 의약품 및 기능성식품의 소재로 활용할 수 있는 효과가 있다.
