Disclosed is an antiseptic cap for a catheter access site to maintain sterility of a injection syringe connection. The antiseptic cap comprises a housing having a generally cylindrical side wall defining a chamber that has an open upper end and an end wall closing the opposite end. The housing has a substantially flat outer bottom surface. The generally cylindrical side wall has a set of threads on an inner surface of the generally cylindrical side wall and on an external surface of the generally cylindrical side wall a plurality of circumferentially spaced ribs extend radially outward from and axially along the generally cylindrical side wall. An access site contacting surface associated with the housing has an antiseptic substance for contacting a distal surface of the access site. The access site contacting surface is an absorbent material positioned within the chamber. The antiseptic substance is a liquid and the liquid is releasably retained within the absorbent material.
