PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a balloon catheter 10 which permits a balloon 30 to be inflated and deflated by a simple operation and is very safe and a valve member 40 for the balloon catheter.SOLUTION: Air is pressed into a catheter body 20 from a syringe. When the balloon 30 is inflated to a necessary volume, the upper side finger application portion 50 of the upper side edge piece 42 of the valve member 40 is depressed by a finger against the elastic force of an elastic connecting piece 43 and the tip of the upper side edge piece 42 is engagingly stopped to the engagingly stopping portion 49 of an elastic engagingly stopping piece 44. When the tip of the upper side edge piece 42 is engagingly stopped to the engagingly stopping portion 49 of the elastic engagingly stopping piece 44, the catheter body 20 is pinched by the edge portion 46 of the upper side edge piece 42 and the edge portion 45 of the lower side edge piece 41, and the catheter body 20 is crushed and a gas passageway 21 is blocked.
