PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a biocompatible silica fiber composed of completely inorganic material and having flexibility and producible even with a simple and small-sized laboratory apparatus.
SOLUTION: An alkoxysilane is dissolved in a mixed solvent composed of water containing triethyl phosphate and an organic solvent, a spinning sol liquid is produced while contacting the solution with air, and the spinning liquid having controlled viscosity is spun by an electrostatic spraying method to obtain a nonwoven silica fabric. The fabric is subjected to ion-exchange in an aqueous solution containing calcium ion and fired at &ge400°C and &le1000°C. Alternatively, the spinning by electrostatic spraying may be carried out without adding triethyl phosphate to the mixed solvent, and the obtained nonwoven silica fabric is heated in phosphoric acid, subjected to ion exchange in an aqueous solution containing calcium ion and fired at &ge400°C and &le1000°C.
