A granular material which hasa mean particle diameter of 150 to 800 micrometers； andan unsettled bulk density of 0.1 to 0.35 g/cm3 and/or a compactibility which results in a compact with a tensile strength of at least 1.7 MPa when the granular material is subjected to a compaction pressure of 266 MPa； andwherein the main component of the granular material is a cellulose derivative or an alkylene oxide homo- or copolymer or a blend thereofis useful for preparing dosage forms with a controlled release profile.
