The present invention relates to a novel crystalline salt lamivudine, a process for its preparation, its pharmaceutical composition and its use in the treatment of viruses such as human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. In one aspect, the present invention provides novel crystalline lamivudine salts particularly useful for the treatment of viruses such as hepatitis (particularly hepatitis B) and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. In one embodiment, one or more crystalline forms of lamivudine hydrochloride are provided. In another embodiment, the crystalline form of lamivudine hydrochloride can be, for example, monohydrochloride. In another embodiment, the crystalline lamivudine hydrochloride is not hydrated or solvated.
