PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a seal capable of storing both lateral movement of an instrument inserted through the seal and instruments of various sizes while retaining the safety in the work space into which a gas is injected.SOLUTION: The surgical access assembly comprises a casing, a slender access member, a seal member, and a pump assembly. The access member is located within the tissue of a patient, and has such a size as to demarcate a pathway configured to detachably receive a surgical object. The seal member is disposed within the casing and has an aperture. The aperture is adapted to transfer between a first state including first dimensions in the lateral direction and at least one next state.
