The present invention addresses the problem of providing a protective composition for gastrointestinal mucosa in order to prevent the occurrence of gastrointestinal mucosal damage when, for example, an oral medication that induces gastrointestinal mucosal damage is taken. As a means of solving this problem, this protective composition for gastrointestinal mucosa is characterized by comprising at least a macromolecular polysaccharide, sodium bicarbonate and/or magnesium carbonate, and a polyvalent alcohol. The protective composition for gastrointestinal mucosa can effectively cause the macromolecular polysaccharide to exhibit a gastric-mucosa protecting effect when a diffusion force acting on the macromolecular polysaccharide is produced intragastrically as a result of the sodium bicarbonate or magnesium carbonate foaming upon contact with gastric fluid, and the diffusion force causes the macromolecular polysaccharide to rapidly dissolve and disperse in the gastric fluid. After the macromolecular polysaccharide that is dissolved and dispersed in the gastric fluid moves into the intestine without decomposing intragastrically, the macromolecular polysaccharide dissolves in intestinal fluid having a neutral or alkaline pH and exhibits an intestinal-mucosa protecting effect without decomposing in the intestine. In accordance with the characteristics and quantity of the polyvalent alcohol, the polyvalent alcohol plays a role as a dispersion medium of the macromolecular polysaccharide, which is a powder, and the sodium bicarbonate or magnesium carbonate, and allows the protective composition for gastrointestinal mucosa to be prepared in a variety of dosage forms.
