An improved excipient comprising substantially homogeneous particles of acompressible, high functionality granularmicrocrystalline cellulose based excipient is provided. The improved excipientcomprises microcrystalline cellulose, a binderand a disintegrant, and is formed by spraying a homogeneous slurry of thecomponents. The excipient provides enhanced flowability/goodflow properties, excellent/high compactibility, and increased API loading andblendability as compared to the individualcomponents, and as compared to conventional excipients formed from the samematerials. The improved excipient has strong intraparticlebonding bridges between the components, resulting in a unique structuralmorphology including significant open structuresor hollow pores. The presence of these pores provides a surface roughness thatis the ideal environment for improved blending withan API.
