The present invention relates to a pharmaceutical composition comprising an aqueous extract of Ageratina pichinchensis for treating wound healing, where the active compound is chlorogenic acid. The method for obtaining the extract allows the preparation of a pharmaceutical composition for topical application in gel form wherein the final concentration of the aqueous extract of the invention is 10% relative to the total volume of gel. The gel provides its healing effect over a period of at least 13 days, a time less than that observed for healing drugs available on the market to exert their effect. Additionally, the active compound that is present in the extract does not require to be purified to perform its healing action, which represents an economic advantage over state- of-the-art available products.
