A method of treating cancer comprising administering a dose of a chemotherapeutic agent in combination with a dose of a composition consisting essentially of attenuated Salmonella typhimurium. The dose of the chemotherapeutic is less than the maximum effective amount of the chemotherapeutic. This combination synergistically reduces tumor burden compared to when the same dose of the chemotherapeutic agent is administered without the composition consisting essentially of attenuated Salmonella typhimurium.
