A method is provided for improving the ability of a population of biological agents to compete and survive in a field environment. By improving the population of biological agents, a modified population of agents can grow, compete with other microbial strains and fungi, and provide protection of plants from pathogens. In particular, modified biological agents that are herbicide tolerant or resistant and altered populations of such agents are selected or manipulated. In this way, protection from disease-causing agents is improved. These modified populations of biological agents can be added to the soil to prevent fungal pathogens and their diseases, thereby promoting plant growth. The present invention is therefore useful for enhancing the competitiveness of modified biological agents compared to other microbial agents, especially those that are not herbicide resistant. The compositions of the present invention include selected or modified herbicide resistance biological agents and modified populations of biocontrol agents.
