Reported herein are novel recombinant respiratory syncytial viruses (RSV) having an attenuated phenotype in which the native positions of the NS1 and/or NS2 genes in the RSV genome are shifted to a higher position, that is at positions that are more distal to the promoter. The changes in the gene positions may be present in combination with mutations at other loci to achieve desired levels of attenuation and immunogenicity. The recombinant RSV strains described here are suitable for use as live- attenuated RSV vaccines. Also provided are polynucleotide sequences capable of encoding the described viruses, as well as methods for producing and using the viruses.La présente invention décrit de nouveaux virus respiratoires syncytiaux (RSV) recombinés présentant un phénotype atténué où les positions d'origine des gènes NS1 et/ou NS2 dans le génome du RSV sont décalées vers une position plus élevée, à savoir une position plus distale du promoteur. Les variations des positions des gènes peuvent être présentes en même temps que des mutations au niveau d'autres loci pour obtenir des niveaux souhaités d'atténuation et d'immunogénicité. Les souches de RSV recombinés décrites ici conviennent pour des vaccins vivants atténués contre le RSV. L'invention concerne également des séquences de polynucléotides capables de coder les virus décrits, ainsi que des procédés de production et d'utilisation de ces virus.
