The implant 10 includes a locking system for restraining contraction of the implant. The locking system has a locked configuration, in which the first and second surfaces 8 and 9 are prevented from moving back towards the contracted configuration, and an unlocked configuration, in which the first and second surfaces 8 and 9 can move back towards the contracted configuration. The locking system may be controlled by rotation of one or more pinions 62 which in turn may be controlled by linear movement of a rack 68. The rack 68 may be configured so as to bias the locking system towards the locked configuration. The implant 10 may also include a stop 84 for constraining expansion of the implant.
