This invention relates to free flowing poly acrylic acid and process for preparing the same. The granules formed there from wherein the granules are flowable, possess an increased bulk density and very low amount of dust generation. The polyacrylic acid granules produced by the process of the present invention are useful in various pharmaceutical and cosmetic applications. The powder form of polyacrylic acid which was previously used in pharmaceutical applications, created material handling problems due to its hygroscopicity, dispersibility, poor powder flow characteristics, dust and static charges. The present invention possess increased bulk density, swelling rate, compressibility index, less hygroscopic relative to any other available polymerized polyacrylic acids. Moisture if absorbed by the polymer of present invention, regains its free flowing properties on drying wherein the rest failed to. The present invention also overcomes the problems associated with commercially available Carbopol® 71G like larger particle size and poor hydration rate.
