A method includes transmitting into a heart of a patientmultiple voltages using multiple respective surface-electrodesattached externally to the patient. Repeatedly per each regionof a plurality of regions of the heart (i) multiple respectivecalibration-voltages are measured in the region； (ii) arespective partial sub-set of the surface-electrodes isselected for the region, whose corresponding calibration-voltagesminimize a cost-function, wherein the cost-functionincludes a first term that depends on magnitudes of gradientsof the measured calibration-voltages, and a second term thatdepends on correlations among the gradients； and (iii) thepartial sub-set of surface-electrodes selected for the region,are recorded for use in a subsequent session； and, in thesubsequent session, a position of a probe inserted into a givenregion of the heart is calculated based only on the sub-setselected for the given region.
