The wheelchair 1 has a wheel 6 with steering position controlled by an actuator responding to a lateral leaning of a users torso relative to a seat 2 of the wheelchair 1, such that the wheelchair 1 may be steered by the user leaning to the left or right. The actuator may be a back-rest 4 that tilts, pivots or rotates. The back-rest 4 may have projections 17, 18 to hold the sides of a users torso. The back-rest 4 may control the steering position of the wheel 6 via a push-pull cable, e.g. Bowden cable 21, or two pull-cables (13, figure 7). The wheel 6 may be mounted on a steering bar 8 which pivots about a vertical axis. The wheel 6 may be freely pivotable as a castor or may be locked by locking pins 12. The wheelchair 1 may be manually propelled and steered by a one-handed user.
