A surgical tool system is described that comprises a handpiece with a power generating unit capable of driving a cutting accessory or an implantable device that is fitted into a patient; and an attachment connectable to handpiece, the attachment serving as a linkage between the power generating unit and the cutting accessory or implantable device for driving the cutting accessory or the implantable device. The handpiece comprises a coil; and the attachment comprises a first coil positioned so that when the cutting accessory or implantable device is attached to the attachment, the first coil is able to receive signals from a coil internal to the cutting accessory or implantable device; and a second coil connected to the first coil and positioned so that when the attachment is attached to the handpiece, the second coil is able to transmit signals received from the cutting accessory or implantable device coil to the handpiece coil.
