Disclosed herein are methods of reducing muscle contraction in a diaphragm or peripheral muscle(s) of a patient sufficient to permit a surgical procedure. The methods may comprise the step of administering an oxime or pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof to a subject in need thereof in an amount sufficient to achieve said reduced muscle contraction/neuromuscular blockade.
