A protein signature (GBMSig) present in GBM tissue is described that includes 33 cell surface proteins that distinguish glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) subjects from healthy controls with greater than 98% accuracy. Furthermore, four of the members of this signature are particularly useful as blood GBM markers. Certain other members of this signature are indicative of the potential effectiveness of the use of TGF-β1 inhibitors in the treatment of this condition. A method of treating and stratifying GBM based on GBMSig protein is also disclosed.
