The present invention relates to a hemostatic material comprising compacted hemostatic aggregates of cellulosic fibers. in some aspects the hemostatic material additionally includes additives such as carboxy methyl cellulose (cmc) or other polysaccharides, calcium salts, anti-infectious agents, hemostasis promoting agents, gelatin, collagen or combinations thereof. in another aspect, the present invention relates to a method for manufacturing the hemostatic materials described above by compacting a cellulosic base material into hemostatic aggregates.
