"antibiotic peptides with broad spectrum antimicrobial activity". This invention relates to antimicrobial peptides having the same amino acid sequence and at least the same antimicrobial activity as those presented by phylloseptins which are isolated from the skin of phyllomedusa hypochondrialis. The peptides have no homology with other known peptides. 19 amino acid antimicrobial peptides are cationic and based on their primary structure all conform to the Î ± -amphiphilic helix pattern. peptide masses determined by spectrometry are in the range of 1.9 to 2.0 kda. The amphiphilic nature of these peptides presumably outlines their biological activities that enable them to associate with lipid membranes and disrupt normal membrane functions. however, no hemolytic activity was observed for these peptides, suggesting a selectivity for prokaryotic over eukaryotic membranes. These peptides may be used in compositions to retard plant pathogens and to protect plants from pathogens, comprising at least one antibiotic peptide and an agronomically acceptable carrier.
