The lens has a surface located adjacent to a second material having a second refractive index. The beam path extends over the distance from its surface to the focal point. The refractive index is calculated according to the distance from the surface to the target focus and the distance from the surface to the actual focus corresponding to the location of the peak intensity of the optical interference signal of the focused light in the lens. The calculated refractive index can be mapped to a region within the lens and used to generate a gradient index profile of the lens.
