The present invention is a composition and method that restores the balance of the stress-related steroid hormone cascade. Co-administration of the compounds of the present invention restores balance to the cascade and promotes or restores normal function to patients suffering from disorders that have a major psychological stress component. The composition comprises a combination of selected isoflavones, alpha lipoic acid and L-dopamine and its precursors, preferably derived from the natural sources disclosed herein. The methods of the invention include administration to patients suffering from PTSD, fibromyalgia, endometriosis and other disorders that have a common chronic stress component.
