A sorbent for an inflammatory mediator for use in a method to treat systemic, regional or local inflammation of a patient suffering from or at risk of inflammation, in which said method comprises the step of administering to said patient the sorbent and in which said sorbent is a biocompatible polymer which is: a polymer comprising residues of divinylbenzene and ethylvinylbenzene monomers; or a highly crosslinked porous styrene or divinylbenzene copolymer, wherein said highly crosslinked porous styrene or divinylbenzene copolymer is: a) a macroporous or mesoporous styrene-divinylbenzene-ethylstyrene copolymer subjected to a partial chlorometry to a partial chloromethyl content 7% molecular weight; or b) a hyper-crosslinked polystyrene produced from cross-linked styrene copolymers by extensive chloromethylation and subsequent post-cross-linking by treatment with a Friedel-Crafts catalyst in a swollen state; or c) a hyper-crosslinked polystyrene produced from cross-linked styrene copolymers by extensive further crosslinking in a swollen state with bifunctional crosslinking agents selected from the group comprising monochlorodimethyl ether and p-xylylene dichloride.Un sorbente para un mediador inflamatorio para su uso en un método para tratar la inflamación sistémica, regional o local de un paciente que padece o está en riesgo de inflamación, en el que dicho método comprende la etapa de administrar a dicho paciente el sorbente y en el que dicho sorbente es un polímero biocompatible que es: un polímero que comprende restos de monómeros divinilbenceno y etilvinilbenceno; o un copolímero de estireno o divinilbenceno poroso altamente reticulado, en el que dicho copolímero de estireno o divinilbenceno poroso altamente reticulado es: a) un copolímero de estireno-divinilbenceno-etilestireno macroporoso o mesoporoso sometido a una clorometilación parcial a un contenido de cloro de hasta 7 % de peso molecular; o b) un poliestireno hiperreticulado producido a partir de copolímer
