The present invention relates to an absorbent binder composition comprising, after application, a hydrophilic polymer having a water-induced crosslinking ability. The absorbent binder composition may comprise 1) at least 15 mass% of a monoethylenically unsaturated polymer, such as a carboxylic acid, a sulfonic acid, or a phosphoric acid, or a salt thereof, and an acrylate or methacrylate ester containing an alkoxysilane functionality A superabsorbent polymer material, and 2) a polent metal cation having at least a bivalent valence. Upon loss of water by evaporation, the alkoxysilane functionality condenses to form a silanol functional group that forms a crosslinked polymer.
