The invention is directed to a method for increasing bone mineral density (BMD) in a postmenopausal woman. The method comprises administering to a postmenopausal woman having a lumbar vertebrae T-score of less than or equal to &minus2 an anti-sclerostin antibody in an amount and for a time effective to increase lumbar vertebrae BMD at least about 9% from pretreatment baseline at twelve months following initial anti-sclerostin antibody administration. The invention also is directed to a method for treating osteoporosis. The method comprising administering to a postmenopausal woman with osteoporosis an anti-sclerostin antibody in an amount of about 70 mg to about 210 mg at once a month, optionally for about three to about 18 months. Alternatively, the method comprises administering an anti-sclerostin antibody in an amount of about 140 mg to about 210 mg every three months, optionally about six to about 18 months.
