PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an improved bone anchoring device which has a small size and which allows for safe handling during surgery.SOLUTION: The bone anchoring device includes a locking ring (8) configured to embrace the head receiving portion (16). A head (3) is configured to be locked in the head receiving portion (16) by compressing the head receiving portion with the locking ring. A rod receiving portion (9) has two cutouts (24) at both ends of the channel extending from the bottom of the channel to a second end (9b) of the rod receiving portion. The locking ring includes two projections (81, 83) located diametrically opposite to each other, wherein when the locking ring is in a position in which the head is not locked, the projection is configured to extend through the cutout (24) and into the channel (12).
