Method for detecting and quantifying cutaneous signs on an area of skin, according to which: * for a plurality of predetermined classes of degrees of skin colour intensity and a plurality of types of cutaneous signs, a plurality of selected wavelengths are identified such that, for each combination of a type of skin sign and class of degree of skin colour intensity, one of the wavelengths can be used for detecting by means of contrast such a type of sign on the skin of a person having a degree of skin colour intensity belonging to this class; * images are taken in white light; the degree of skin colour intensity and the corresponding class are automatically identified from said images; according to this class of degree of skin colour intensity, images are automatically captured at the wavelengths that correspond to the combination of this class of degree of skin colour intensity with a type of sign that it is sought to detect, then at least this captured image is processed, so as to detect signs of said type that it is sought to detect.
