Embodiments of the art relate to contact lenses having a core coated with a hydrogel layer, and methods for making such lenses. The coated lens may comprise a gas permeable hard contact lens. The coated lens may comprise a hybrid of silicone and a gas permeable hard contact lens. In one aspect, embodiments are covalently bonded to at least a portion of the outer surface adapted to contact the ocular surface with a lens core comprising an outer surface and having an equilibrium constant of water of less than about 2%.
