The current invention provides materials and methods for preventing, treating, or disrupting a biofilm-associated infection by administering a disinfectant composition comprising chlorhexidine, either directly or indirectly, to the site of the infection, or potential infection. The current invention also provides materials and methods for disrupting, dissociating, penetrating biofilm and/or preventing biofilm secretion by administering a disinfectant composition comprising chlorhexidine, either directly or indirectly to the site of the biofilm, or potential formation of biofilm.
