A surgical instrument is provided that includes a shaft, an end effector, and a push / pull drive element. The push / pull drive element may include a head extending perpendicularly to the push / pull direction of the push / pull element. The head of the push / pull drive element may have distal portions each having a different cross-section than the cross-section of the main portion of the head between the distal ends. The push / pull drive element may include an engagement portion in contact with the end effector to actuate the end effector. The engaging portion may have a first width, the distal portion may have a second width, and the second width is wider than the first width. The surgical instrument is provided to include an electrical connector coupled to the at least one conduit for providing electrical energy to the end effector.
