The method involves providing a collection pan (1) with a bottom tank (5), and placing a wick (11) in the bottom tank. The wick is upwardly guided to a plate through an opening (10). A mat (15) with large capillarity is placed on the wick and the plate, and a plant to be watered is placed on the mat. The collection pan inclusive of bottom tank is filled with water for initial drip watering. The collection pan outside of bottom tank is drained after a time period for moisture penetration through a closable water outlet (13), for transition to capillary watering. An independent claim is also included for a device for watering a plant.
