The present invention relates to an improved synthesis of N-monofluoroalkyltroban plates using fluoroalkyl iodides or fluoroalkylsulfonate esters. The present invention also provides the use of this method for the preparation of the non-radioactive tropane intermediate FP-CIT and its subsequent conversion to the 123 I-labeled radioactive pharmaceutical DaTSCAN ( 123 I-Iofluffan). Also provided are the use of fluoroalkyl iodides or fluoroalkylsulfonate esters in the alkylation process of the present invention.
