A method of controlling a surgical stapling instrument, comprising: initiating a primary operating state, wherein during the initial operating state, the cutting element is advanced distally； detecting a threshold state on the cutting element； transmitting a threshold state to the operator of the surgical stapling instrument； receiving one of a plurality of inputs from the operator, wherein many inputs contain the first input and the second input； initiating a secondary operating state in response to an input from an operator, wherein in response to the first input, the cutting element is distally actuated and, moreover, in response to the second input, the cutting element is pulled proximally. 2. The method of claim 1, wherein the surgical stapling instrument is configured to create maximum force to dissect the tissue, and wherein the threshold state comprises a force on the cutting member that is greater than the maximum force. The method according to claim 2, wherein the force on the cutting element exceeds the maximum force when the cutting element is actuated distally in response to the first input. The method according to claim 1, wherein transmitting information about the threshold state to the operator comprises transmitting to the operator a warning about a possible overload. The method of claim 1, wherein transmitting threshold state information to an operator comprises generating haptic feedback. The method of claim 1, further comprising suspending the distal advancement of the cutting element after detecting a threshold state, and wherein the distal advancement of the cutting element is resumed in response to the first input.
