A container 1 for automatically watering plants has a double wall defining a first water storage chamber 3 having a filling opening 13 at its top closable by closure means 12 and an opening 7 at its base leading to a second water storage chamber and a plant receiving chamber 8, the opening 7 being controlled by control means connected to the closure 12 and such that its lower end portion covers and closes opening 7 when it is moved upwardly on removal of closure 12, the opening being freed again when the closure 12 is replaced. The control means may comprise a strap 14 attached at 15 to the inner wall of the container and having a slot 16 by which it can be hooked on to projection 17 on the inner wall while the container is being filled. In a modification the control means comprises a slide movable in guides looted on the inner wall of the container adjacent the opening 7. The size and position of opening 7 may be made adjustable by means of an apertured slide which is slidable between the actual plant contamer and the inner wall of container 1. The container 1 may be adapted to receive either a potted plant as shown or potting soil.
