There is provided an eye patch for releasable mounting to a face of a patient, used to retain eyelids of said patient closed during a medical procedure, including a first portion having a first adhesive coating for attachment to the face of said patient adjacent an edge of the patent's eye socket, the first portion including a central opening extending therethrough, and a second portion extending over said central opening and having a second adhesive coating for attachment to the eyelids of said patient, the second portion being transparent and extending over said patient's eyelids when closed, such that said eyelids can be observed during a medical procedure, wherein the adhesive bond strength of the second adhesive coating is weaker than the adhesive bond strength of the first adhesive coating, whereby the first adhesive coating retains the eye patch in position on said face during the medical procedure, and the second adhesive coating restraining the eyelids from opening, while inhibiting injury to the patient's face when the eye patch is removed. There is also provided a method of constructing a single use sterile dressing and a method of use thereof.
