The present invention relates to a liquid composition for administration to a cartilage surface during surgery on cartilaginous joints, the composition having an osmolarity of 325 mOsm or higher. It has been found that such a composition can significantly improve the survival of cartilage during surgical procedures, and, remarkable, there are benefits even when the cartilage is not intended to receive, and does not receive, any significant surgical insult.
