Ozone-containing gas is supplied to each of: a pre-reactor (7), main electron beam irradiation reactor (11) and a post-reactor (14). The material for purification, passes through all three in sequence. An Independent claim is included for the corresponding process. Preferred features: Electrons enter the main reactor through a window (23). Flowing air (e.g.) cools the window. At the same time electrons generate ozone in the air. This is supplied to the pre- and/or post-treatment reactors. Volumetric rate of gas production from the window and volumetric rate of material supply into the main reactor, are in the ratio 0.1:1 to 10:1, preferably 5:1 to 7:1. Gas leaving pre- and post-reactors, and optionally some from the main reactor, is collected in a closed system. Fresh air is supplied to it via a controller (26), offsetting diverse process gas volume changes. Gas from the closed system is recycled for window cooling duty as before. Mixing of gas and material, takes place in the reactors. There is a set residence time for the material, in each reactor. This can be zero in the pre- and/or post-reactor, achieved by bypassing, should material supply condition permit. Oxidant chemicals are added into the pre-reactor. The material is sent from the post-reactor for a further stage of biological purification (17). From either of these two stages, it is re-cycled to the pre-reactor.
