Disclosed is the use of a parenteral formulation comprising an effective amount of 4-[[4-[[4-(2-cyanoethenyl)-2,6-dimethylphenyl]amino]-2-pyrimidinyl]amino]benzonitrile (also known as TMC278), or an acid-addition salt thereof, and a carrier, to provide long term prevention of HIV infection in an individual at risk of being infected by HIV, wherein the medicament is adapted for administration subcutaneous or intramuscularly and wherein the time interval between administrations is at least two weeks.
