A wearable apparatus and method for altering the heart rate of a user, comprises providing a device 2 capable of engaging the patients skin 1 to provide a rhythmical tactile stimulus to the user, altering the users heart rate, and an arrangement for securing the device to the user (, Fig 4). The device may comprise a motor driven vibrator, a piezoelectric actuator, a shape changing material, a linear actuator, a pneumatic actuator, a hydraulic actuator or an electrical contact for delivering an electrical pulse to cause a muscle contraction. The arrangement for securing the device to a user may comprise a strap or band placed around a limb, an adherent pad, a holder or pouch in an item of clothing, a piece of jewellery or an accessory e.g. a belt. A heart rate monitor may further be provided and a control capable of altering the stimuli rhythm in response to the monitored heart rate.
