An apparatus 40 comprises means 402 for applying electrical stimulation to a human or animal body via a pair of electrodes 50a, 50b. The apparatus further comprises means 406, 410 for measuring impedance of the body between the pair of electrodes 50a, 50b. The apparatus preferably comprises means 400 for controlling the electrical stimulation based upon the impedance measured. In one embodiment, the means 400 for controlling electrical stimulation adjusts the amplitude of the electrical stimulation applied. The means for controlling electrical stimulation 400 is optionally further operable to stop electrical stimulation if the measured impedance is below or above higher and lower threshold values respectively. Preferably, the apparatus further comprises a pad 30 containing the electrodes 50a, 50b, which is suitable for placement on the body. The apparatus may further include means for measuring voltage 410 and current 406.
