The retractable pet lead 300 which automatically provides a cadenced resistance to the unspooling of the lead. The peat lead comprises a leash 320, a spool mechanism 330 that allow unwinding and retraction of the lead. The spool mechanism is resiliently biased to a retracted position and provides cadenced resistance to extension of the leash. The spool mechanism may comprise a resisting mechanism 340 which resists the unwinding. The spool may be provided with resisting regions 333 that have gear teeth and non-resisting regions 334 that have no teeth, with the resistance mechanism comprising a resisting gear 341 that interacts with the regions. The spool may be provided with one or more protrusions (135 figure 1A) that interact with the resistance member as the spool rotates. With the Audible feedback may also be provided.
