A support assembly 10 for supporting an open top food container 12, which may be used for animals. The assembly 10 includes a base 16 mountable to an upright surface 18. There is an outwardly extending support member 56 for the container 12, and a selectively mountable retaining member 30, which is supported by the support member 56, and secured by a securing arrangement 42. The securing arrangement 42 is selectively movable between a locked position in which the retaining member is secured to the base, or an unlocked position in which the retaining member can be mounted or dismounted. The base may have elongate mounting holes, through which a cranked end part of the retaining member may pass through. The securing arrangement 42 may be slidable and automatically move under gravity to a locked position, where the mounting holes are partially obstructed. The container 12 may have a rim 14 to engage with the support member 56.
