Methods for determining the prognosis of multiple myeloma in a patient are provided by measuring the expression of BCMA in a sample. Also provided is a method of treating multiple myeloma by administering an effective amount of an antigen binding protein that binds to BCMA and measures the expression of BCMA in the sample.
