A composition comprising: a hydroxymethyl-substituted phosphorus-containing compound selected from the group consisting of tetrakis (hydroxymethyl) phosphonium salt, C-C1-6alkyl or C-Salkenyl-tris (hydroxymethyl) phosphonium salt, and tris (hydroxymethyl) phosphine, and isothiazolinone compound selected from 1,2-benzisothiazolin-3-one, 2-methyl-1,2-benzisothiazolin-3-one, and mixtures thereof. 2. The composition of claim 1, wherein the isothiazolinone compound is 1,2-benzisothiazolin-3-one and the weight ratio of the hydroxymethyl-substituted phosphorus-containing compound and 1,2-benzisothiazolin-3-one is from 8: 1 to 1: 8.3. The composition of claim 1, wherein the isothiazolinone compound is 2-methyl-1,2-benzisothiazolin-3-one and the weight ratio of the hydroxymethyl-substituted phosphorus-containing compound and 2-methyl-1,2-benzisothiazolin-3-one is from 10,000: 1 up to 5000: 1.4.
