Disclosed is an anti-fugal substance capable of inhibiting the proliferation of mold and/or yeast, an anti-fugal substance capable of inhibiting the germination of a spore and/or the elongation of a hypha, or an anti-fungal substance having the following characteristic properties 1) to 3), which is produced by a bacterium belonging to the genus Burkholderia: 1) the substance has an anti-fungal activity at pH 7.0 2) a supernatant of a culture produced by culturing the bacterium belonging to the genus Burkholderia in a potato dextrose culture medium has an anti-fungal activity and 3) when a supernatant of a culture produced by culturing the bacterium belonging to the genus Burkholderia in a potato dextrose culture medium is ultrafiltrated through an ultrafiltration membrane having an MWCO (molecular weight cut off) of 10 kD, the substance can be held on the surface of the ultrafiltration membrane. Also disclosed is a bacterium belonging to the genus Burkholderia which can produce the anti-fungal substance. Further disclosed is a method for inhibiting the proliferation of a fungus by using the anti-fungal substance or the bacterium.
